Seed Rib

Seed rib blends the vertical pull of a rib with the speckled texture of seed stitch, giving a soft, reversible fabric with quiet character. A common version works a knit-one, purl-one rib on the right side, then on the return row works the stitches so that one set of columns keeps its smooth knit rib while the other breaks into little seed bumps, so the fabric reads as narrow ribs separated by lines of texture. It has more give than a plain textured stitch but drapes more softly than a firm rib, which makes it a comfortable, good-looking choice for scarves, cowls, and cardigan bodies where a plain rib would feel stiff. It is genuinely beginner-friendly, using only knits and purls with no increases or special tools, and it lies flat without curling. The only thing to watch is reading the fabric on the return rows so the seed columns and the rib columns stay in their lanes. It uses a similar amount of yarn to plain rib.
