Moss Diamond Stitch

diamonds outlined by travelling purl stitches and filled with moss-stitch texture, a knit-and-purl brocade

A worked swatch of Moss Diamond Stitch, knit texture visible

Moss diamond stitch outlines diamonds with travelling purl lines on a stockinette ground and fills the inside of each diamond with moss stitch, giving a richer version of a plain brocade. Single purl stitches shift one column left or right on each row to draw the diagonal sides of the diamonds, while the small area they enclose is worked in alternating knits and purls so it reads as speckled moss against the smooth background outside. Repeated across, the outlined, textured diamonds tile into a handsome all-over pattern that has the structure of a gansey motif with extra surface interest. It is a traditional guernsey and Aran-adjacent design, worked entirely with knits and purls and no cables, so a chart or row counter is the only help you need to track the travelling outlines and the moss fill. It lies far flatter than a cabled diamond and suits sweaters, scarves, and blankets. Keep the purl outlines moving one stitch per row so the diamonds stay even.
