Diamond Brocade Stitch

Diamond brocade draws an all-over pattern of diamonds using nothing but knits and purls. Single purl stitches sit on a stockinette background and shift one stitch left or right on each row, so a purl travels diagonally up and out, meets its mirror image, and closes into a diamond outline. Worked over a repeat, the diamonds tile across the whole fabric. Because the raised outlines are purl bumps against smooth knit, the effect is a subtle, elegant relief that reads as texture rather than colour, and it lies much flatter than cables while giving a similar sense of structure. It is a classic gansey and guernsey motif from traditional fisherman knits. The only skill is tracking which stitch carries the purl on each row, so a chart or a row counter helps, but there are no increases, decreases, or special tools. The wrong side shows the pattern in reverse as knit bumps on a purl ground.
