Double Moss Stitch

Double moss, sometimes called double seed, is single moss stitch scaled up so the knits and purls sit in two-by-two blocks instead of alternating every stitch. Work it over a multiple of four stitches. Rows 1 and 2: (k2, p2) to the end. Rows 3 and 4: (p2, k2) to the end. For the first two rows you knit over the knit blocks and purl over the purl blocks, so the columns hold; on rows 3 and 4 you swap them, placing purl bumps where the smooth knits were and knits where the bumps were. That two-row hold before the swap is the only difference from single moss, and it is what turns the fine speckle into a bolder, squarer grid of bumps. The fabric is reversible, lies flat without curling, and reads the same from either side, which makes it a reliable choice for scarves, blanket panels, and anywhere a plain edge would roll. Read the fabric as you go: a smooth V should be knitted and a bump should be purled, whatever the written row says.
