Andalusian stitch is a gentle four-row pattern that scatters small purl bumps across a stockinette background without the density of seed or moss stitch. Work it over an even number of stitches. Row 1: knit. Row 2: purl. Row 3: (knit one, purl one) to the end. Row 4: purl. The single row of alternating knits and purls in the middle of the repeat leaves a line of raised bumps, and because that row is offset from the last one, the bumps stagger into a soft, regular texture rather than stacking. It sits between plain stockinette and a full seed stitch, so it adds interest and helps flatten the curl of stockinette while keeping a smooth, refined look. That makes it a favourite for baby garments, cardigans, and anywhere you want quiet texture. It uses only knits and purls and is easy to memorise, and the wrong side stays mostly smooth.
