Woven Stitch

Woven stitch, a close relative of linen and tweed stitch, uses slipped stitches and carried floats to build a fabric that mimics woven cloth. On each patterned row some stitches are slipped while the working yarn passes in front, laying a small horizontal float across the surface, and the next row offsets which stitches are slipped so the floats interlock like the weft threads of weaving. The result is dense, firm, almost non-stretchy, and very flat, with a tidy over-and-under surface that hides the knitted structure. That stability is exactly what you want for bags, cushions, structured jackets, and blankets that should hold their shape rather than drape, and the surface takes two-colour striping beautifully, each row of floats picking up the current colour. It is a touch more involved than plain slip-stitch texture because of the consistent floats, and it works up more slowly and uses more yarn than stockinette. Keep the carried floats an even, relaxed length so the fabric stays flat and does not pull in.
