Lattice Cable

The lattice cable, also called a trellis, sets narrow cables travelling diagonally across the fabric so they cross one another and enclose diamonds, giving a woven, basket-like grid rather than a single vertical rope. Instead of crossing stitches in the same spot every time, you move small groups of knit stitches left and right over a purl ground using a cable needle, so the cables lean, meet, cross, and part again, and the crossings tile into an open diamond mesh. It is one of the more advanced knit-and-cable patterns because you track several travelling lines at once and must keep the crossings consistent, so a chart is close to essential. The payoff is a rich, sculptural all-over texture that anchors an Aran sweater or a statement blanket. As with all cables the fabric pulls in widthwise and uses more yarn, so swatch in pattern before committing to a size.
