Ponte Roma
fitted dresses, trousers, blazers, skirts

Ponte roma (often shortened to "ponte") is a double knit, meaning it's built on two sets of needles that interlock two layers of loops into a single dense fabric with identical faces on both sides. That double construction is what makes ponte firmer, heavier, and more stable than a single knit like jersey, closer in body to a woven than most knits are, while still built from loops rather than crossed threads. Garment-weight ponte runs about 250 to 350 g/m², and it's most often a cotton, rayon, or polyester blend carrying 5 to 10% elastane for recovery.
Because both faces look the same, there's no right or wrong side to track when cutting, and because the double-loop structure is so stable, ponte holds a garment's shape well: cut edges barely curl and the fabric doesn't sag out under its own weight the way jersey can. It stretches in both directions but with more resistance than jersey, giving a supportive rather than floaty feel. It presses reasonably well for a knit and tailors more like a stable woven, which is why it works for structured silhouettes.
Ponte roma is a standard choice for fitted dresses, trousers, pencil skirts, and unlined blazers that want the comfort of a knit with the structure of a woven. It still needs a ballpoint or stretch needle and a stretch stitch or walking foot, but it's more forgiving to sew than lighter knits because it doesn't curl or shift as much under the needle. Its weight and stability make it a good knit for a beginner moving toward more tailored knit garments.
