Y-Stitch

The Y-stitch forms a small Y in the fabric by working a shorter stitch out of the middle of a taller one. You make a treble crochet, then chain one and work a double crochet into the centre of that treble's post, so the treble is the stem of the Y and the chain and double crochet split off as the arms. A row of these, usually with a little space between, gives an open, airy, gently latticed fabric of linked Ys that looks more intricate than the basic stitches behind it. Turned upside down the same move makes an inverted Y, and combining the two builds diamond and net patterns. It is intermediate because working into the middle of a post takes a steady hand and the spacing must stay even, but there are no unusual techniques beyond that. It drapes well and suits scarves, wraps, and light blankets that want texture with openness. Keep the treble stems the same height and place the middle stitch consistently so the Ys line up cleanly across the row.
