Sedge Stitch

Sedge stitch, sometimes called grit or crunch stitch depending on the exact recipe, repeats a little group of graduated stitches to build a dense, richly textured fabric. A common version works a group of single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet into the same stitch or across three stitches, skips the appropriate number, and repeats, so each group makes a small fan that leans and the fans pack together into a firm, ridged surface. Because the three stitch heights sit side by side, the texture is busier and more sculptural than a plain row, and it reads well in both solid and variegated yarns. The fabric is thick and sturdy with modest drape, which suits cowls, bags, and blankets. It uses a bit more yarn than plain double crochet for the coverage. Keep the group order consistent and count the stitches you skip, since the whole pattern relies on the fans lining up row to row.
