How to Choose Interfacing: Fusible vs Sew-In, Woven, Knit, and Weight

Interfacing is a second layer that adds body and stability to small areas that take strain or need to hold a shape, such as collars, cuffs, waistbands, plackets, facings, and buttonholes. Choose it on three axes: attachment (fusible irons on, sew-in is stitched in), construction (woven has a grain and suits wovens, nonwoven has no grain and is a cheap general choice, knit stretches and suits knits and drapey fabric), and weight. The one rule that prevents most mistakes: pick interfacing the same weight as or lighter than your fashion fabric, match its stretch to your fabric, and always fuse a test scrap first.
Interfacing does a quiet but important job: it gives structure to the parts of a garment that would otherwise collapse, stretch out, or wear through. A shirt collar stands because it is interfaced; a waistband keeps its shape; a buttonhole survives being done and undone because the fabric behind it is reinforced. It is almost always hidden between the fashion fabric and a facing, so it is chosen for behaviour, not looks.
Where interfacing goes
Interfacing is applied to specific pieces, not the whole garment. The usual places are collars and collar stands, cuffs and plackets, waistbands and facings, the button and buttonhole bands, pocket welts, and the upper edge of a strapless bodice. In bags and hats it does more of the work, giving the whole piece its body. Away from those stress and structure points, extra interfacing just adds stiffness and weight where you do not want it.
Fusible or sew-in
The first choice is how it attaches.

Fusible adhesive needs firm, even heat and a smooth surface to bond to, so avoid it on heavily textured or napped fabrics like velvet, corduroy, boucle, and faux fur, on heat-sensitive synthetics and sequined or metallic fabrics, on very loose or open weaves the glue can seep through, and on waterproof or coated fabrics. On any of those, reach for sew-in. When unsure, fuse a scrap and check.
Woven, nonwoven, or knit
The second choice is the base fabric of the interfacing itself.

The guiding idea is to match the interfacing to how the fabric behaves. A stable woven wants a woven or nonwoven interfacing; a stretchy knit wants a knit interfacing so the seam can still stretch; a soft, fluid woven wants a knit or weft-insertion so it keeps its drape.
Weight: same or lighter
Choose interfacing that is the same weight as your fashion fabric or lighter, never heavier. The interfacing should support the fabric, not overpower it. A heavy interfacing on a light fabric reads as stiff and boardy and telegraphs its edges through to the right side. When you want genuine rigidity, as in a bag base or a structured hat, that is a deliberate choice made with a purpose-made stiff interfacing, not the default for garments.
Interfacing comes in light, medium, and heavy weights, and the same product line usually offers all three. Because "medium" means different things across brands, the reliable method is to hold a candidate against your fabric, or better, fuse a scrap, and judge the combined hand rather than trusting the label alone.
Applying fusible interfacing
Fusing is a press, not an iron-and-glide. Gliding shifts the interfacing and smears the adhesive, which is what causes bubbles and lifting later. The dependable sequence:
- Test first. Fuse a scrap of the exact fabric and interfacing, let it cool, then wash and press it the way the finished garment will be treated. Check for bubbling, stiffness, adhesive showing through, or colour change before committing.
- Adhesive side down. The bumpy, slightly shiny glue side faces the wrong side of the fabric. Fusing it the wrong way glues your iron.
- Use a press cloth. A cloth between the iron and the work protects both and catches any stray adhesive.
- Press and hold. Set the heat, steam, and time to the manufacturer's instructions, press straight down, hold for the stated time, then lift and move to the next overlapping section. Do not slide.
- Let it cool flat. The bond finishes as it cools, so leave the piece undisturbed until cool before handling.
Sew-in interfacing is simpler: baste it to the wrong side within the seam allowance, or catch it in the seams as you construct the piece, so it is held without any adhesive.
